Letter: Climate debate: Consider the source

Frank Bair’s March 28 letter, “Ocean acidification is just hype,” made a point that the research supporting the ocean acidification process didn’t “withstand honest scientific peer review.” He quotes a website, http://co2science.org, that makes a case that the rising CO2 trend is actually beneficial to the marine habitat.

This website is a slick front for Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change, which is supported in part by funding from Exxon Corporation (remember the Exxon Valdez?). CSCDGC supported the now defunct Greening Earth Society, an effort by Western Fuels Association, a non-profit cooperative that supplies coal services to consumer-owned electric utilities, to convince farmers, town officials and rural legislators that doubt existed about the effect of carbon dioxide on global warming.

Are Co2 Science and its officers objective scientists, providing peer-review processes for climate change research, or are they mouthpieces that are in the hip pockets of big oil and coal concerns? A vast amount of science generated by the world’s governments, colleges, universities and climate research institutions cannot all be wrong in their conclusions about climate change and our impact on it. We can make a difference, small efforts add up, and we will make a better world for our children by what we start today.
