LA PINE, Ore. (AP) — Sheriff’s officers say a Central Oregon man whose ATV crashed into a tree managed to walk about 12 miles despite his injuries before he was found.

Deschutes County sheriff’s Capt. Marc Mills says a Twin Lakes Resort employee found 41-year-old Clayton Lichtenhahn walking near the resort on Tuesday afternoon and contacted deputies.

The La Pine man was taken to a Bend hospital, where KTVZ said he was listed in serious condition.

Mills say a search helicopter found the man’s ATV, which had crashed into the end of a tree that fell across a Forest Service road. The ATV was only about four miles from the man’s home. After the crash he apparently walked about 12 miles in the other direction. Mills says search officials believe he was disoriented.

The sheriff’s office says the man set out Monday afternoon for a ride.
