First Settler wins Santa Anita feature

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — First Settler rallied on the far outside to overtake Blue Maiden and win Friday’s $59,400 feature for fillies and mares by a half-length at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Joe Talamo, First Settler ran 1 1-8 miles on the turf in 1:48.39 and paid $34.40, $9.60 and $3.20 at 16-1 odds.

Britain-bred Blue Maiden returned $3.80 and $2.60. Ireland-bred Smart Striking was another 114 lengths back in third and paid $2.20 to show as the 13-10 favorite in her second U.S. start.

The victory, worth $35,400, increased First Settler’s career earnings to $99,620, with three wins in nine starts.
