FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. (AP) — A judge in San Juan County, Wash., has found probable cause to hold a 15-year-old boy accused of killing his mother and setting their house afire.

Prosecutors have not yet filed charges in Sharon Hammel’s death.

Court papers obtained by KIRO-TV say officers found a note in the boy’s room addressed to his mother, asking for her forgiveness and saying he hoped she would still love him “even in the afterlife.”

KIRO says both the defense and prosecutor asked the judge during the teen’s first court appearance Friday to keep the boy in custody.

An autopsy found that the 49-year-old single mother died of multiple stab wounds and a skull fracture. Fire broke out at the Friday Harbor home early on April 3.

The boy was arrested for investigation of murder and arson.
