DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Sports authorities in Bahrain are still hoping to reschedule the Bahrain Grand Prix this year, despite the ongoing crackdown on anti-government protesters on the island nation.
The Bahrain GP was originally scheduled to be the season-opening Formula One race on March 13.
It was canceled in February by Bahrain’s crown prince after protests paralyzed the country. The sport’s governing body has given Bahrain’s federation until May 1 to decide if a new date can be set for the race this year.
Bahrain International Circuit Chief Executive Officer Sheik Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa told the Bahrain News Agency late Tuesday that no decision on a new date has been made.
But he said “now that security has prevailed,” efforts are under way to “host the race anew.”
