PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland Fire and Rescue officials say a fire started by a child playing with a lighter has displaced a family of three adults, four children and two dogs.
No one was injured. An off-duty Portland firefighter who was nearby helping a friend move made sure everyone evacuated safely. Then Brad Martin grabbed a garden hose and began fighting the fire until other firefighters could arrive.
Spokesman Gabriel Watson says the fire Tuesday was confined to a bedroom but caused extensive smoke damage throughout the house. No damage figure was immediately available.
