Community notebook: Final weekend approaches for Clark County Open bowling

Bowlers continued to roll into Bailey’s Classic Lanes over the weekend for the 62nd edition of the Clark County Open Bowling Tournament.

All 200 slots were filled for the two days of bowling during the second of the tournament’s three weekends. The team of Brent Higdon and Wally Eason took over the top spot in the doubles competition with a score of 1,537 pins that included a 383-pin handicap.

In most of the other competitions, the first-weekend leaders remained on top. That includes singles play, where Jesse Pryor’s 810 score (with 102 handicap) remains the best. The Corwin Beverage team of Charlie Palmer, Shawn Garden Sr., Mark Smudde, Dennis Bailey and Bill Michaels, Jr., continues to lead with a total of 3,691 pins, including a handicap of 251.

Dave Sorter leads the optional scratch-scoring singles division with a 721 series. Jason Fischer has the top all-events total at 2,262 pins including 249 handicap. In the scratch-scoring all-events list, Smudde’s 2,189 score now tops the list.

The largest tournament staged each year by the United States Bowling Congress Clark County chapter, the 2011 county bowling championships continue with sessions at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the Saturday and at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. As of Monday afternoon, limited slots remained open for the final weekend.

Cyclist joins national team

Colby Wait-Molyneux, a junior at Skyview High School, has been chosen to race in Belgium as a member of the USA Cycling junior national team. Wait-Molyneux departs on Wednesday and will participate in six days of international racing during the trip.

A member of the Hammer/CMG Racing Team coached by two-time Olympian Oliver “Butch” Martin, the 17-year-old is hoping to land a spot on the junior national team for cycling’s world championships later this year.

King’s Way lacrosse falls

Cameron Parker netted four goals to lead unbeaten Bainbridge to a 12-7 win over King’s Way on Saturday in a Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association match played at Columbia River High School.

Tyler Preston had three goals, one assist and fielded six ground balls for King’s Way. Clayton Frank, Jack Beall, Koda Robinson and Nick Guinett also had goals for the Knights. King’s Way goalie Max Zandstra made 26 saves.

King’s Way (5-3-0) next faces Seattle Prep (3-4-0), at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Seattle’s Lower Woodland Park playfield.

• The Evergreen girls lacrosse team hosts Ballard at 7 p.m. on Thursday at McKenzie Stadium. They also play at 1 p.m. Saturday against North Kitsap, also at McKenzie.

Team reaches soccer semis

The Vancouver United Soccer Alliance Timbers 1999-born Reds have advanced to the semifinals of the Washington Youth Soccer Challenge Cup Division 1 state tournament for girls under-11.

The Reds scored a 3-0 win over Westsound FC in the quarterfinals, with goals by Makayla Woods, Angelina Krawzyk, and Angela Gomez. Challenge Cup Division 1 is the top competitive tournament for WYS at the U-11 age group.

The Timbers will be playing Eastside Red of Issaquah at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Starfire Soccer Complex in Tukwila. The Finals match will be Sunday, also at 2:30 p.m.

Playing for the Timbers ‘99 Reds are: Laura Schlueter, Maddie Christian, Anna Foster, Elise Schey, Laurel Mickel, Jessica McDonald, Melody Hollar, Angelina Krawzyk, Angela Gomez, Moira Chaney, Emily Wilson, Marissa Bobay, Makayla Woods, and Chloe Brusseau. The coaches are Rob Wilson and Nicole Frank.

• State tournaments in three age divisions for boys and seven age divisions for girls wrap up in late April and early May, and are followed by advanced competition tryouts for the 2011-12 season.

• Salmon Creek Soccer Clubs will hold advanced competition tryouts at Felida Park on these dates: Under-10 and under-11 boys and girls on April 27, under-12 boys and girls on April 22, under-13, under-14 and under-15 boys and girls on May 6, and girls tryouts for the under-16, under-17, and under-18 age groups will be held on May 17.
