Letter: Constitution clear on democracy

The Columbian
Published: April 13, 2011, 12:00am

In his April 4 letter, “Unions work to destroy Constitution,” Roy Rapier says that he cannot find democracy in the U.S. Constitution. Let me see if can help him. “The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People.” … “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” … “The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people.” … “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged … on account of sex.”… “The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative … shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax.” … “The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied.”

A very democratic republic, wouldn’t you say?
