BEND, Ore. (AP) — A central Oregon man was stabbed to death at his second home in Southern California and a suspect was later killed by police.

The Bulletin newspaper in Bend reports that 72-year-old George Mendenhall of Sunriver died Wednesday after he was attacked at his second home in Borrego Springs, Calif.

The newspaper said Mendenhall was still conscious when police and paramedics arrived, and was able to identify his attacker.

California investigators identified a handyman who had worked for Mendenhall as a suspect, beginning a search that ended when 52-year-old Craig Petersen was shot and killed at a rest stop by a San Diego County sheriff’s sergeant.

Mendenhall and his wife, Kate, are longtime sponsors of the Sunriver Music Festival, and helped form the now-defunct Sunriver Preparatory School in the early 1980s.
