ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer was not in the starting lineup for Thursday night’s game against Tampa Bay because of soreness.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire would not say where the soreness was, but added Mauer will be re-evaluated for Friday night’s game with the Rays.

Mauer had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in the offseason. He had a very light work load during spring training to try and reduce the wear and tear on his legs and stay fresh for the rigors of catching an entire season.

The three-time AL batting champion is hitting .235 with four RBIs through his first nine games this year. Earlier this season, Gardenhire said Mauer got banged up while blocking a lot of pitches in a game from Francisco Liriano.
