SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon lawmakers will hear from the public about giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

A Senate committee has scheduled a public hearing on Monday.

The bill would allow people who can’t show a birth certificate to get a limited state-issued license that would allow them to drive. The license could not be used for other purposes, such as obtaining a concealed handgun permit or registering to vote.

Supporters of the measure say illegal immigrants will drive whether they have a license or not, so they should be tested to ensure they know the rules of the road.

Opponents say the licenses could be used by drug cartels to facilitate smuggling.

Lawmakers missed a deadline to schedule a vote on the bill, so it cannot advance out of the committee.
