BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — The Navy is planning to build a new $715 million wharf to load and unload ballistic missiles for Trident submarines at the Bangor base on the Hood Canal, about 20 miles west of Seattle.

The Navy says the existing facility is 30 years old and needs repairs.

The Kitsap Sun reports the Navy expects to begin construction in 2012 on a covered 560-foot wharf to be completed in 2016.

Eight Trident subs are based at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor. The subs carry 24 missiles. Each missile can carry eight warheads.

The Navy is holding public hearings on plans for the new wharf on Tuesday in the North Kitsap High School Commons, Wednesday in the Chimacum High School Commons and Thursday at Seattle Central Library. Each begins at 6 p.m.
