EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — The inmate accused of strangling Monroe Reformatory Corrections Officer Jayme Biendl will wear civilian clothes but remained shackled during pre-trial court appearances.

Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Thomas Wynne made those decisions at a hearing Monday in Everett.

The Daily Herald reports the trial for Byron Scherf is set for July 29 but will likely be delayed to give lawyers more time to prepare. The prosecutor is seeking the death penalty if Scherf is convicted of aggravated murder.

Biendl was killed in January at the prison chapel. Scherf is a convicted rapist serving a life sentence.
