OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Olympia public works crews are painting lines on city sidewalks 25 feet from each public parking pay station.
Ruth Snyder with the city says it wants to make the no-panhandling zones as clear as possible for people.
The no-panhandling zone approved by the city council Tuesday night takes effect next week. It also applies to ATMs, but the city won’t paint lines around the privately owned cash machines.
The Olympian reports the zone was adopted because downtown businesses complained panhandlers have been harassing people when they go to pay for parking.
