Letter: Residency of shoppers questionable

The Columbian
Published: April 21, 2011, 12:00am

I disagree with the April 15 editorial, “Wrong solution: Removing sales tax exemption for Oregonians would hurt Clark County businesses.” It is my belief that most of the shoppers with Oregon identification for the purpose of not paying sales tax are really residents of Washington state. It makes no sense to me why Oregonians would cross the Columbia River to buy goods and services from Clark County when the same goods and services are available in and around Portland.

In walks around several neighborhoods, my wife and I see many Oregon plates on vehicles parked in front of our neighbors’ homes. The money Washington state would gain is not only in sales tax, but these same people would have no need to cheat with Oregon licenses and they would pay Washington license fees and Washington auto plates.
