PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — An Olympic National Park spokeswoman says a 24-year-old man who fell 200 to 300 feet on Mount Olympus on Thursday has been airlifted to a Seattle hospital with an apparent broken arm and head injuries.

Spokeswoman Barb Maynes tells the Peninsula Daily News that James Menking was a member of a three-person glacier research team from the University of Washington that was hiking to Blue Glacier.

She says he fell down an avalanche chute.

A Harborview Medical Center nursing supervisor said Menking was in serious condition Thursday night.

The Coast Guard says it sent a helicopter crew to pick him up on the mountain and bring him to Port Angeles. From there he was transferred to an Airlift Northwest helicopter for the flight to Harborview.
