BEND, Ore. (AP) — An autopsy has shown that a central Oregon woman whose body was found submerged in a backyard utility vault six weeks after her disappearance died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

KTVZ-TV in Bend reported that Dr. Karen Gunson, the state medical examiner, also confirmed Friday the woman’s identity as 72-year-old Sandra Meyer.

The body of Meyer’s 71-year-old husband, John Meyer, was found last month at their house in Bend. Police said he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and is believed to have been responsible for his wife’s death.

Bend police said Thursday that past searches of the backyard using dogs failed to find Sandra Meyer’s body because it was underwater in the covered, underground utility box. It was found Wednesday by family members.
