HAZEL DELL, Wash. (AP) — Clark County firefighters found an injured cat suffering from smoke inhalation hiding behind a couch in a unit of a Hazel Dell apartment building that was the scene of a three-alarm fire.

Thursday’s fire displaced more than 50 residents of 24 units in a building at the Rolling Creek Apartments complex.

Clark County Fire District 6 spokeswoman Dawn Johnson says the black and gray cat had a singed tail and burns to its face and paws. Firefighters used a pediatric oxygen mask to help revive it. The cat was found early Friday morning, 13 hours after the fire broke out. Johnson says a sheriff’s deputy took it to a 24-hour veterinary hospital. The cat was later reported in stable condition. The Southwest Washington Humane Society was taking care of it.

Johnson says the fire has been ruled accidental but the Clark County fire marshal continues to investigate the cause.
