Letter: Cuts to social programs unacceptable

“The Pathway To Prosperity” … wow! Great title for Rep. Paul Ryan’s, R-Wis., budget proposal. However, it’s all but a pathway to prosperity when you slash Social Security, Medicare and other programs that benefit our children, elderly, sick and poor. As with all extremists’ plans for our future, Budget Committee Chairman Ryan proposes yet another tax cut for the wealthy, decreasing the corporate tax to 25 percent. Even former President Ronald Reagan increased the corporate tax and closed corporate tax loopholes.

We have already had a good look at what the Bush tax cuts did for us when Republicans controlled the House and the Senate from 2000 to 2006. Does anyone remember where your 401(k) was in December 2008? The Bush tax cuts have been in place for almost a decade and how’s that working for us? Where are the jobs? And now Ryan and the rest of the Tea Party want to cut social programs and continue to subsidize Big Oil, give tax breaks and loopholes to corporations, and continue tax breaks for corporations that outsource jobs overseas.

Well, at least we have had the opportunity to take a good look at what things would look like if they had control of both the House and Senate.
