What the business does: Stu Bailey, manager of Rick’s Custom Fencing & Decking, said the company specializes in the design and installation of custom decks, fences and patio covers. Rick’s can complete the entire project, from design to installation, or they can set the posts and frame and allow the homeowner to complete the job. For the do-it-yourself types, Rick’s sells a materials-only package.
How has the economy affected your business: Bailey said the company felt a slowdown for a year or two, but things have started picking up this spring. He thinks people who have been waiting to start projects are now ready to move ahead.
Greatest challenge: Bailey said the business is cyclical, and it is challenging to go from being almost dormant in the winter to having four or five two-man crews working six days a week to keep up with the summer demand. The work usually drops off following the hectic summer season.
