HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) — Police in the Portland suburb of Hillsboro, Ore., say they’ve arrested three teenage girls in a restroom trash can fire that caused $22,000 damage and forced the evacuation of the Health and Science School.

Lt. Mike Rouches says the girls told investigators they started the April 18 fire to get out of class.

He says a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old were arrested Monday on first-degree arson accusations while another 14-year-old was arrested for investigation of criminal mischief. The girls were processed and released to their parents. Rouches says they have been expelled.

About 680 students and 64 staff members were evacuated for a half hour. No one was injured.

Hillsboro fire spokesman Storm Smith tells The Oregonian the fire “ruined” the restroom walls, ceiling, wiring and carpet, as well as damaging fixtures.
