SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Legislature is looking at requiring banks to maintain foreclosed properties.

The House Rules Committee is set to consider the idea on Wednesday.

The bill follows a housing slump that has seen a dramatic increase in foreclosed homes. In some areas, neighbors have been frustrated by months of inattention to foreclosures with overgrown weeds or stagnant water that allows mosquitoes to breed.

The proposal would require banks to inspect foreclosed homes at least once every 30 days and address any problems found.
