OEIRAS, Portugal (AP) — Robin Soderling won his first clay-court match of the season Wednesday, beating Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-1 in the second round at the Estoril Open.

The top-seeded Swede lost his opening match on clay in Barcelona last week. He is preparing for next month’s French Open, having twice reached the final at Roland Garros.

Soderling overpowered Chardy in the first set, winning four straight games after twice breaking the Frenchman and twice not conceding a point on his own serve.

Both players were plagued by unforced errors in the second set and each broke three times.

Sixth-seeded Thomaz Bellucci eliminated Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.

The top three seeded women’s players — Alisa Kleybanova, Jarmila Gajdosova and Klara Zakopalova — advanced to the quarterfinals.
