SEATTLE (AP) — A Catholic religious order that runs schools across the country has become the church’s second order in the United States to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection because of sexual abuse claims.

The Seattle Times reports that the Christian Brothers Institute based in New Rochelle, N.Y., released a statement Thursday saying it filed for bankruptcy court protection in Southern District of New York.

Most of the cases in the country come from alleged abuses at the now-defunct, Seattle-area Briscoe Memorial School.

The order did not say how many abuse claims are pending against it, but victims’ attorneys estimate there are more than 50 claims.

Jesuits in the Northwest declared bankruptcy in 2009 with some 200 pending claims.
