EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A witness has told police the suspect in the fatal shooting of a Eugene motorcycle officer was tailgating him before he tried to make a traffic stop in neighboring Springfield.

The Register-Guard reports the witness said she saw the suspect trying to pass Officer Chris Kilcullen and that he had to move to avoid being hit by the suspect’s car when it veered across lanes on the Highway 126 Expressway.

The witness told investigators the suspect’s car sped away, and that Kilcullen followed until the car came to a stop for a red light. The witness says he was shot just after he caught up, stopped and put down the kickstand on his motorcycle.

Fifty-six-year-old Cheryl Kidd has been charged with aggravated murder in the shooting.
