SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have traded up to take Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick with the 36th overall pick in the NFL draft.

The selection of Kaepernick in the second round Friday night was the first major move under new coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Trent Baalke. The 49ers gave Denver their second-round (45th overall), third-round (108th) and fifth-round (141st) picks to move up and take Kaepernick.

Kaepernick threw for 3,022 yards and 21 touchdowns last season at Nevada but is not expected to be an immediate NFL starter. The 49ers already have extended an offer to Alex Smith to return as quarterback, and that could give Kaepernick the time needed to transition.

Smith was at the 49ers’ training facility Friday working out.
