PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon soldier has died in a noncombat incident in Iraq.

The Oregon Army National Guard said Spc. Andrew Lara of Albany was supporting Operation New Dawn and was assigned to Fox Company, 145th Brigade Support Battalion attached to 3rd Battalion, 116th Cavalry Regiment.

The death of the 25-year-old Lara was under investigation, and details weren’t immediately available.

Lara was a South Albany High School graduate. He enlisted in June 2009, and was to be in Iraq for about a year. He was scheduled to return home on leave next month.

The Oregonian reported Lara is survived by his 18-month-old daughter, his brother and his parents, Ramiro and Lynn Lara of Albany. They were flying to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, to accompany their son’s body back to Oregon.
