Letter: Repeal sales tax exemption

The Columbian
Published: April 30, 2011, 12:00am

I am sick and tired of being asked if I am a Washington resident when checking out of a large local retailer. I am sick and tired of the woman in front of me fumbling around for her Oregon driver’s license. I am sick and tired of having to wait while the clerk enters the license number into the cash register, all to save 25 cents on the purchase. I am sick and tired watching the same woman getting into her car with Washington plates. I am sick and tired of hearing local merchants bemoaning how many customers they’ll lose if the sales tax exemption is repealed. I am sick and tired of wishy-washy politicians first proposing to repeal the exemption, and then reversing themselves. I am tired of being sick and tired.

The sales tax exemption must be repealed as soon as possible.
