SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Carolina coach Ron Rivera says the team met with former Arizona quarterback Derek Anderson on Monday and is putting the final touches on a deal for him to join the Panthers.

Anderson would be the most experienced of Carolina’s quarterbacks. The other three are No.1 overall pick Cam Newton and second-year players Jimmy Clausen and Tony Pike.

The 28-year-old Anderson is in his seventh NFL season. He was released by the Cardinals last week. He previously played for Cleveland under offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who currently runs the Panthers’ offense.

Rivera says Anderson would not be able to practice with the team until Thursday because of collective bargaining rule regarding player signings.

Anderson threw for 2,065 yards in 12 games last season with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
