LONDON (AP) — Star British racehorse Canford Cliffs is being retired to stud after a career that included five Group One victories.

Trainer Richard Hannon says the 4-year-old horse has a leg injury and it was decided to end his career rather than risk further problems. He is set to stand at Coolmore Stud in Ireland.

Hannon said Thursday “it’s a terrible shame — it’s heartbreaking, but I don’t want to see him end up with a bad injury.”

Canford Cliffs lost by five lengths to Frankel in the highly anticipated Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on July 27. Canford Cliffs had won his five previous Group One races, including a stunning victory over the great mare Goldikova in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

Hannon says “he is, without doubt, the best horse I have had in over 40 years as a trainer.”
