EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The leader of Lane County’s search and rescue program says he hopes a pilot program to exchange life jackets expands throughout Oregon.

The Eugene Register Guard reports (http://bit.ly/qypBuE ) John Miller of Lane County Search and Rescue has organized a life-jacket drop off program.

Miller says he too often encounters boaters without life jackets, a violation of state law.

In this, the program’s first year, Miller says he’s trying to collect as many life jackets as possible, and will even add a whistle to the zipper of each life jacket.
