Bruce Ziegman, 63, says he will retire Oct. 31 as executive director of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library.

Ziegman was promoted to the top job in January 2001 after serving as assistant director of the library district for more than 11 years. Ziegman oversaw the district’s computer automation; the introduction of Internet services and the later controversy that led to implementing Internet filtering; four library operating or construction funding campaigns, of which two were approved by voters; and the opening of five new community library buildings: Three Creeks, La Center, Battle Ground, Cascade Park and most recently the Vancouver Community Library.

“I’m very proud of all we’ve been able to achieve during my tenure here, including the outstanding staff we have assembled over the years,” Ziegman said in a statement released by the district. “With the recent completion of the Vancouver building projects — in particular, the district’s new main library — I’m ready to step down and pass along leadership of the district to someone new.”

Board of Trustees Chairman Bill Yee congratulated Ziegman for his outstanding service to the district and its citizens. “Bruce has impressed us with his leadership, especially with the three recent new library projects in Clark County,” Yee said. “We’re sorry to see him go.”

Yee said the board is starting a national search for a new director immediately and will retain the assistance of a search firm. “We hope to have a new executive director in place by February 2012,” Yee said. In the interim, the Board has appointed Operations Director Patty Duitman as acting executive director.
