The July 28 story reported “Flat fee weighed for septic owners: $21 annual charge would replace inspection, tipping.” While a 60 percent compliance rate isn’t very good, increasing the fees for inspection and tipping fees or a flat taxing of $21 per year is not going to force homeowners into inspecting and pumping septic tanks. The real purpose, of course, is more money for the coffers of county government. If you want to get a higher percentage of compliance, you need some teeth to enforce compliance. Inspections went from four years to three. How is that going to do anything to help the groundwater?
Again, it’s about the money. It’s always about the money. Attend the next meeting of the county’s board of health to let your voice be heard.
