JOHNS CREEK, Ga. (AP) — Paul Goydos was among the first to arrive Thursday for the PGA Championship. He could turn in an eight-hour day without ever hitting a shot at Atlanta Athletic Club.

Goydos, a two-time PGA Tour winner, is the first alternate for the final major of the year.

Unlike the U.S. Open, he at least was allowed to play a practice round earlier in the week. But on Thursday, he was forced to be in the area of the first and 10th tee in case someone withdrew.

Goydos says he doesn’t think former U.S. Open champion Jerry Pate, who asked for a special invitation, is taking up a spot in the field. Goydos argues the way he has played this year, people might say he’s taking up a spot.
