Talking Points: Mariners’ youth movement

Look at the Mariners’ youth-laden lineup now that Seattle is totally in a “play-the-kids mode.’’ There’s Dustin Ackley, Mike Carp Trayvon Robinson, Casper Wells, Charlie Furbush, Kyle Seager and Blake Beavan.

Well, at least taking their lumps now portends good things for the Mariners in a season or two, right?

Turn back the clock just a bit. Three years ago at this time it was Jeff Clement, Wladimir Balentien, Bryan LaHair, Brandon Morrow, Ryan Rowland-Smith, Matt Tuiasosopo, Rob Johnson and Mike Morse.

How well did that turn out?

Talking Points likes this line from Seattle Times reporter Geoff Baker about the current Mariners:

“That’s the thing with “playing the kids.” Like playing with a spankin’ new toy at Christmas. All shiny and different at first, with sky’s the limit potential. Until you discover that they’re all human. They all have flaws in their games that need work.’’

One other M’s note: All the new faces the Mariners have around these days appear to be confusing even closer Brandon League.

Before Sunday’s game, League was working out and called across the clubhouse to pitcher Charlie Furbush.

“Hey, Casper, you going to ride the bike?” League said, apparently confusing Furbush with Casper Wells, who came over from Detroit with Furbush in the Doug Fister trade.

Furbush didn’t respond or even look up, so League called out again: “Casper?”

Finally, a media member informed League that Furbush’s first name was Charlie.

A sheepish League said, “Oh, yeah,” before calling out, “Charlie, you going to use the bike?’

Furbush grinned and shook his head no.
