Letter: Voting doesn’t reflect independence

Joan Walker’s July 30 letter, “Herrera Beutler blocking progress,” was right on the money. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, campaigned as an independent voice for Southwest Washington. She has shown herself to be a Tea Party follower to the core. Voting to dismantle Medicare while not taxing billionaires more? Vouchers for seniors to buy private health insurance? Tax credits for big oil instead of trying to preserve Social Security?

Deficit reduction is a serious problem requiring both revenue increases on the super wealthy and spending cuts. Medicare and Social Security can be modified by raising the contribution cap of $107,000. among other changes. Don’t gut the social safety net for seniors. Next election, vote for a truly independent voice for Clark County, not a candidate like Herrera Beutler.
