PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — English nobility rarely reaches Oregon these days.

But The Oregonian ( http://bit.ly/nbU1Dt ) reports that John Jacob Astor, 3rd Baron Astor of Hever, stopped off in Portland on Wednesday with members of his family on their way to bicentennial festivities in Astoria.

The city at the mouth of the Columbia is named for the John Jacob Astor, who founded the fur trading company that established at outpost there in 1811.

Astor says he will have to miss the Mayor’s Ball, because he has to jet home to England to attend a session of Parliament.
