Letter: Cost must be known before building

The Columbian
Published: August 12, 2011, 5:00pm

In “The Music Man,” the fast-talking salesman declared “We got trouble in River City.” Here are the lyrics with a slight modification: Oh, we got trouble, Right here in River City, With a capital T and that rhymes with C and that stands for CRC.

The Columbia River Crossing has botched this whole bridge crossing up quite a bit. The Aug. 7 local view, “Case for constructing new I-5 Bridge built upon faulty data,” by Tom Buchele of Pacific Environmental Advocacy Center, made it clear that the financial facts just don’t add up. There are just too many overestimates and the toll rate is certainly underestimated ($5.40). Faulty facts create faulty conclusions and the cry of the people is “Stop!” Endorsements of this new mega bridge are not justifiable in light of the these new revelations. The people don’t want to build it and then see what it costs. This isn’t good government. This is the type of leadership that is crushing our community, our state and our nation in debt. My thanks to Buchele for declaring that the king has no clothes and that CRC and our leaders are running naked on this bridge. We the people have a right to vote on this mega bridge.
