Letter: Remember, state employees vote

The Columbian
Published: August 13, 2011, 5:00pm

In a recent report, our state Legislature had reduced state employees’ wage/salaries 3 percent across the board. Economic conditions being as they are, the legislators refused to lower their own salaries the same amount. An Aug. 1 story reported, “Most state lawmakers elect not to cut own pay.” At about $42,000 per year, 3 percent is $1,260. Apparently, a legislator will suffer much more than a state employee will from a pay cut. Isn’t it wonderful that legislators can write laws to suit themselves and punish the hand that feeds? Oh, by the way, Olympia representatives — remember that state employees vote, you know.
