Boy, 16, dies after cliff fall in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a teenager has died after an 80-foot fall from a cliff at Rocky Butte in east Portland.

The 600-foot butte is an extinct volcano whose east slope was once extensively quarried, leaving cliffs. An experienced climber died there in May, and another person was injured this year.

The Oregonian says the teen who died after the Monday night fall was Austin Fisher. Fire Capt. Mark Kaiel responded to the scene. He says a friend who was with Fisher said they had just been hanging out on the edge of the rocks on a warm evening.

A school district spokesman says Fisher would have been a junior this fall at David Douglas High School.

Paul Corah, a Portland fire spokesman, calls the area dangerous and urges visitors to be wary.
