NEW YORK (AP) — Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez tells GQ magazine he “wanted to fight” Rex Ryan after New York’s coach said he would consider benching him after a tough stretch of games last season.

Sanchez, who appears on the cover of the magazine’s September issue, says he was “really mad” Ryan would think about sitting him last December.

Ryan wanted to give backup Mark Brunell extra snaps during practice after Sanchez’s poor performance in a loss to Miami. But, Sanchez tells the magazine he pushed Brunell away when he walked into the huddle. When offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer told him Ryan wanted Brunell to take snaps, Sanchez responded: “He can come tell me.”

Sanchez remained in the starting lineup, and the Jets went to the AFC championship game.
