SEATTLE (AP) — The King County Council has voted 7-2 to add a $20 fee to the annual car license and use the money to avert cuts in county Metro Transit bus service. County Executive Dow Constantine and council members announced Friday there were enough votes to impose the fee without a public vote. The revenue will allow Metro to avoid a 17 percent cut in bus service.

Voting “no” Monday evening were Councilmen Reagan Dunn and Pete von Reichbauer, who said they preferred an option that would have sent the fee to a vote of the people in November.

Part of the agreement for the $20 “congestion reduction charge” will give vehicle owners eight bus tickets with each license renewal.
