BGHS jazz band hosts Grammy winner

Portland bass player and Grammy Award winner Esperanza Spalding will join Greg McKelvey’s Battle Ground High School Advanced Jazz Band on Aug. 25 for a fundraising concert.

A former student of McKel vey’s in Portland, Spalding earned a Grammy Award for best new artist in February.

She has donated her time to help school musicians cover competition and travel costs, and will play with the advanced band and with a group of Portland jazz musicians at BGHS from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The school is at 300 W. Main St. in Battle Ground. Tickets cost $25 in advance, $30 at the door. For $50, people can also attend a VIP reception from 6 to 7 p.m. at Galeotti’s Restaurant, 801 E. Main St., Battle Ground.
