Seattle mayor concedes, says let’s build tunnel

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn has conceded defeat in a battle over a planned tunnel to replace the city’s Alaskan Way Viaduct along the waterfront.

After looking at results of Tuesday’s election, McGinn said, “The public said move ahead with the tunnel, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

The vote on an issue seen as a tunnel referendum was nearly 60 percent in favor of the tunnel.

The state Transportation Department is prepared to bore a $2 billion tunnel under downtown Seattle to replace the elevated section of Highway 99.
