SHELTON, Wash. (AP) — The largest private landowner in Mason County — Green Diamond Resource Co. — and the Trust for Public Lands are working on a deal to keep 18,000 acres near Shelton as a working forest.

The Olympian reports (http://bit.ly/q1LvVT) current zoning for the land would allow 1,700 homes on the property.

The deal to sell conservation easements through the nonprofit conservancy group would still allow development of about 800 homes on 7,000 acres the Shelton-based timber company owns in northeast Mason County.
