MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Simon Gerrans will leave Britain’s Team Sky to join new Australian outfit GreenEDGE for the 2012 season.

Gerrans joins fellow Australians Stuart O’Grady, Cameron and Travis Meyer, and Jack Bobridge at GreenEDGE, Australia’s first UCI World Tour-licensed team which is in the process of applying for a ProTeam license for next year.

Gerrans finished third at Amstel Gold this year, rode in the Tour de France and earlier this month won the Tour of Denmark.

He is the first Australian cyclist to win stages in the three Grand Tours — the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Spanish Vuelta, most notably claiming stage 15 of the 2008 Tour.

Gerrans said Thursday that joining GreenEDGE had a “coming home” feeling to it.
