INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former Indiana basketball star Steve Downing has been hired as Marian University’s new athletic director.

Downing returns to his home state after spending the last 10 years as Texas Tech’s senior associate director of athletics. At Marian, an NAIA school in Indianapolis, he will oversee a department that has more than 400 athletes competing in 21 sports.

Downing spent 22 years as associate director of athletics at his alma mater before leaving for Texas Tech. But he is best known for his playing days.

He took coach Bob Knight’s 1973 team to the Final Four. Downing was named that season’s Big Ten MVP after averaging 20.1 points, 10.6 rebounds. He also won an NBA title with the Boston Celtics in 1974.
