WESTPORT, Ore. (AP) — A ferry that serves as a lifeline to communities in the lower Columbia River when landslides close roads will be replaced.

The Daily Astorian reports (http://bit.ly/qONAgX ) federal and other funding will combine to put $3.9 million toward the new ferry, which will carry 23 cars. It currently carries 11.

The replacement will also accommodate tour buses and trucks. It is scheduled to start operations in 2014.

The ferry runs from Puget Sound, Wash. to Westport, Ore. It’s of particular importance to workers at the Georgia Pacific Wauna Mill.

The ferry is operated by the Wahkiakum County Public Works Department in Washington.
