STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State sophomore Silas Redd is preparing to assume a bigger workload this season in Happy Valley.

The Nittany Lions must replace career rushing leader Evan Royster, and offensive coordinator Galen Hall says Redd will take over the role as the lead back.

Hall calls Redd more of an explosive threat, though Redd isn’t on Royster’s level yet when it comes to gaining a consistent 3 or 4 yards a carry.

The 5-foot-10 Redd says he’s gained about 14 pounds in the offseason to weigh in around 210. It’s in preparation of taking more hits from opposing linebackers, and to absorb more blows while blocking in the backfield.

With senior Stephfon Green off the roster for undisclosed reasons, junior Brandon Beachum is expected to be Redd’s backup.
