ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley says he’s “extremely hopeful” to play in Week 1 of the NFL season.

Cooley is dealing with a sore left knee. He’s had blood platelet treatment to get rid of the swelling and has been keeping in shape by running on an antigravity treadmill.

Cooley had surgery on the knee at the end of last season. He says he’d be further along if he had been able to work with the Redskins conditioning staff during the lockout.

Even after he returns, Cooley might have to deal with some sort of discomfort throughout the season.

The Redskins open the season Sept. 11 against the New York Giants.
